TURBULENT FLOW AND LAMINAR FLOW

TURBULENT FLOW AND LAMINAR FLOW

Turbulent flow:  That type of flow in which the fluid particles move in a zig-zag way or non uniform. In other words

In turbulent flow, fluid particles move in a random manner resuling in mixing of the
particles. Turbulent flow is possible at high velocities and when the fluid is less
viscous, in case of pipe flow.

Note : If R. >4000. flow is turbulent.

Laminar flow : Laminar word is derive from the word laminationt, which means one layer over other layers. In other words

The particle move in layers gliding smoothly over the adjacent layer.

Characteristics of laminar flow:

(i)   low  fluid velocity

(ii)  Highly viscous

(iii) Flow is stream an parallel to each other so that to stream line does not intersect
each other.

Note : In case of pipe flow, if R  <2000, flow is laminar.
